On September 10, 2019, Mr. Trump in yet another wave of ever changing and erratic decisions told his National Security Advisor Mr. John Bolton to walk out of the White House! He served in this position since April 2018, however, now that he is out, let’s analyze the doctrine he had towards foreign policy.
Bolton has been widely known as a foreign policy hawk and has been a staunch advocate for regime change in Iran, Syria, Libya, Venezuela, Cuba, Yemen and North Korea. He has also repeatedly called for the termination of the Iran nuclear deal and he saw it done during his term at the White House.
He was an advocate of the Iraq War and continues to support the decision to invade Iraq. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Mr. Bolton has been an ideological extremist who believed in war over diplomacy. On the front of interior policy as well, on gun control, he was widely known as a serial arms control killer. His rigid doctrine on militarism and systematic approach to dismantling the guardrails on nuclear proliferation have destabilized our world.
Not only Bolton saw the end of Iran nuclear deal in line with his doctrine, he also asked Trump resume denuclearization talks with an unforgiving and untrustworthy North Korea, while allowing them to continue conduct smaller range missiles test while talks stand stalled. So, Bolton managed to break the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty, the Agreed Framework with North Korea, the Iran Deal, and, most recently, the INF treaty which stood between Russia and US since 1987 and kept Europe out of Nuclear cross-hair.
Reportedly, he had just one major target left before realizing his dream of fully dismantling our nuclear guardrails: New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), which was signed on 8 April 2010 in Prague, and, after ratification, entered into force on 5 February 2011 . This critical, treaty is all that is left now to prevent an all out nuclear arms race between the U.S. and Russia. With Bolton’s roadblock out of the way one still not know that with Trump still in, who might be the next National Security Advisor!
